Dan’s First Half-Century

Dan Schlossberg of Fair Lawn, NJ is the only American journalist who covers baseball and travel exclusively.

The author of 40 baseball books, he is also the founder of the North American Travel Journalists Association [NATJA] and TRAVEL ITCH RADIO, a popular weekly podcast with a live 30-minute interview format.

He also launched the baseball theme cruise format, aboard Cunard’s QE2 in 1981, and has created, coordinated, and hosted more than two-dozen since.

A Bronx native who moved with his parents to Northern New Jersey early in life, Dan graduated from Passaic High School in 1965 and Syracuse University in 1969. After three summers of working as a college intern for the Passaic Herald-News, he became Associated Press Sports Editor for New Jersey immediately after leaving college.

He later worked in a variety of editorial positions for Motor Club of America, American Express, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and The Bergen Jewish News, plus the travel-centric New York PR firm of M. Silver Associates.

A full-time freelancer since 1986, Dan has been published by Baseball Digest, Baseball Illustrated, the official World Series and All-Star programs, and many other on-line and print periodicals. He has also won numerous awards, including the first-ever Journalist of the Year for Historic Hotels of America in 2015, and is a member of the 2021 edition of Who’s Who in America.

Respected by his peers, he has been president of the Syracuse chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the Working Press Association of America, and the North American Travel Journalists Association. He is now president emeritus of NATJA.

Dan’s books include The New Baseball Bible: Notes, Nuggets, Lists, and Legends From Our National Pastime; When the Braves Ruled the Diamond: 14 Flags Over Atlanta, The 300 Club: Have We Seen the Last of Baseball’s 300-Game Winners?, and the ghost-written autobiographies of Ron Blomberg, Milo Hamilton, and Al Clark.

He is the former travel editor of New Jersey Lifestyle and At Your Leisure and a current contributor to forbes.com, Latino Sports, USA TODAY Sports Weekly, and Sports Collectors Digest. He created and hosted a baseball podcast called BRAVES BANTER for seven years on BlogTalkRadio.com.

Dan enjoys public speaking and has appeared as a guest on MLB Network’s High Heat with Christopher Russo and Baseball Now with Brian Kenny. He has given many talks to service clubs, synagogues, and libraries, often in conjunction with book-signing events.
